The Government of Canada is working with provinces, territories, industry, academia, and international partners to take action on climate change, put a price on carbon, and reduce carbon pollution. Our vision is to use the coming decades to meet rising global demand for oil and gas while funding the next generation of renewable energy.
By innovating our oil and gas sector through clean technologies, we will benefit the environment and create jobs for Canadians ─ helping us reach our target of reducing GHG emissions by 30 % below 2005 levels by 2030.
Oil and Gas Clean Tech Program
Budget 2016 committed $50 million over two years to Natural Resources Canada to invest in technologies that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the oil and gas sector. The Oil and Gas Clean Tech Program supports the evolution of clean oil and gas technologies to help develop Canada’s hydrocarbon resources in sustainable ways.

Environmental Studies Research Fund
The Environmental Studies Research Fund (ESRF) is a research program, which sponsors environmental and social studies around petroleum exploration, development and production. It is designed to help make decisions about oil and gas exploration and development on Canada's frontier lands.
Canada’s Ocean’s Protection Plan
The Ocean’s Protection Plan is the most significant investment ever to protect our oceans and coastlines. Collaborating with Indigenous and coastal communities, this plan will ensure Canada develops a world-leading marine safety system that meets the unique needs of our country from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
This includes enhancing our research on oil spill response and countermeasures technology to ensure that our Canadian waters remain safe and clean, for today’s use and for future generations.
