Looking for an intern?

Looking to expand your team but don’t know where to find an intern? There are many ways you can find an eligible intern for the Science and Technology Internship Program. Since the program is targeted towards new graduates, a good place to start could be at the career centre of your local colleges and universities. A career counselor at the institution could then help direct potential graduates or alumni to your organization.

In addition, your organization can promote the internship just as you would any other job, such as through job fairs and online postings.

Engaging the intern

Once you have found a good fit between an intern and your company, you will want to ensure that your intern remains motivated throughout the internship. One key factor for this is to provide the intern with challenging work combined with the guidance and mentoring to succeed. You should always begin the internship with a skills assessment and development plan for the intern and to keep track of his/her progress throughout the internship. Take the time to meet with your intern to talk about performance and development. When interns feel appreciated, they produce better work!

Evaluating the intern

At the end of the internship, you must provide the intern with a performance evaluation. As the interns are in the beginning phases of their career, it is very important that they receive honest constructive feedback. Let them know what they are doing well and what they can work on! Good evaluations should include concrete examples and provides the opportunity for further discussions.
