Senegal National Geomatics Plan

Support the Senegalese government in elaborating and implementing a national geomatics plan that will contribute to the optimal and sustainable management of the Senegalese territory and of its human resources.

Objectives

  • Develop uniform standards for spatial data.
  • Establish standards for cost-sharing of responsibilities.
  • Expand existing data infrastructure and technologies for data collection to establish a topographic data base.
  • Provide training on use and implementation of geomatics technologies.
  • Promote awareness among the Senegalese private sector and operational management on the capabilities and applications of geospatial information and models.
  • Open West Africa to Canadian geomatics organisations.

Partners

  • Earth Sciences Sector (ESS), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)
  • Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
  • Government of Senegal

Duration

From January 2009 to July 2013

Background

This six million dollar project is supported by CIDA and executed by ESS under a Memorandum of Understanding between Canada and Senegal signed in August 2008.

The National Geomatics Plan (NGP) and its implementation strategy will be developed in collaboration with the Government of Senegal to serve as a guidebook for achieving the country’s goals in terms of geospatial information. The related measures will aim to build capacity for the retrieval, processing, analysis and dissemination of information. This will in turn create more effective governance through a structured and harmonized management of land and resources, both human and natural.

The Canadian private sector will receive contracts to develop the initial projects for creating the NGP, and thereby will highlight the Canadians capability and open the markets for Canadian companies in Western Africa.

ESS will be directly involved in the creation of a series of materials demonstrating how geospatial data can be developed into useful tools, such as customizable models for tracking outbreaks of malaria or for providing a standardized address system to assist emergency crews.

The NGP will provide the global management structure for the implementation of these types of models and an accurate and standardized database of geospatial data.
