Canada-India Landslide Project
Collaborate towards increasing knowledge in the prediction and prevention of landslides and mitigating the risks through in-situ monitoring, evaluation and assessment. At the same time, actively promote Canadian private sector expertise in landslide monitoring/mitigation to potential clients involved in landslide work in India.
Objectives
- Enhance the visibility and prominence of Canadian landslide expertise in India.
- Improve the landslide hazard assessment capacity in both India and Canada.
-
Increase the resiliency of India and Canada against landslide hazards through:
- promotion of in-situ Canadian technology;
- collaborative activities; and
- capacity building.
- Reduction in loss of life and infrastructure resulting from landslide hazards in India and Canada.
Partners
- Earth Sciences Sector (ESS), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)
- Indian Geological Survey
Duration
From September 19, 2006 to December 31, 2009
Background
This project operates through a Memorandum of Understanding between NRCan and the India Ministry of Mines signed on April 1st 2003 and a Project Annex between India Ministry of Mines and NRCan signed September 19th 2006.
The Canada-India landslide project provided a three-year opportunity to actively promote Canadian private sector expertise and technology to be used for assessing landslides in India, specifically with in-situ ground monitoring equipment and computer programs for processing slope instability data.
The joint project included technology transfer and capacity building of national expertise residing in the Geological Survey of India through a series of seminars, short courses, field trips, and other activities coordinated and provided by scientists in NRCan, academia and the private sector.
The program successfully increased the knowledge of Indian landslide experts on monitoring landslides, and thus reducing the risk of losses associated with slope failures in their country. Similarly, Canada's private sector benefits by increasing their access to global markets that are interested in their products and expertise.
