Strategy and Planning Division
Mandate
The Strategy and Planning Division is composed of two groups - the Strategic Policy Group (SPG) and the Business Planning Group (BPG).
SPG provides strategic support to the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) and other senior managers of the Earth Sciences Sector (ESS), and coordinates Sector input into decision-making within NRCan and externally.
SPG supports development of programs and facilitates collaboration on policy issues by:
- Helping to ensure that ESS is well aligned with government priorities and the Department's policy framework, and is responsive to emerging issues;
- Assisting ESS in its efforts to create or seek involvement in new federal policies and programs through which it can serve Canadians better; and
- Participating in and coordinating ESS input into horizontal Science and Technology (S&T) and policy teams within the department and across government.
BPG drives excellence and a results-based focus by implementing effective stewardship, tools and practices in the areas of integrated planning to strengthen accountability and align planning and reporting processes.
BPG provides support to the department by:
- Maintaining and improving the sector’s level of compliance to the Policy on Management, Resources and Results Structure (MRRS);
- Supporting branches within the Earth Sciences Sector (ESS) to achieve planned outcomes; and
- Enabling the sector to demonstrate the results of its work to Canadians and Parliamentarians
S&T Liaison enables the transmission of knowledge from all ESS programs and projects to be multi-directional, rather than confined by program structure, and raises awareness of ESS S&T contributions to NRCan priorities. The overriding goal of the group is to enhance visibility and communicate relevance of the Sector's activities, while showcasing its world class research, linked to Natural Resources Canada and Government of Canada priorities.
S&T Liaison accomplishes its goals by:
- Making ESS science and technology knowledge and discoveries available/accessible;
- Promoting S&T knowledge to aid in understanding issues and providing evidence for policy development and operational solutions; and
- Connecting specialists across fields to enable insight and discovery as well as understanding.
