CURRENT S&T / RESEARCH

My research focuses on advancing hyperspectral remote sensing, improving data quality, and extracting information supporting monitoring and management of our natural resources. This includes:

  • Calibration/Validation: Advancing hyperspectral applications requires rigorous data quality assurance and characterization. This entails enhancing standards and protocols for supporting field acquisitions, and in quality assurance reporting of derived information.
  • Imaging Spectrometer Data Analysis System (ISDAS) : One of the first systems to process hyperspectral data, ISDAS (created at CCRS) supports analysis and visualization of hyperspectral imagery. Many of its innovations continue to be adopted by the Canadian industry and international partners.
  • BioGeoChemical Mapping: Hyperspectral remote sensing can increase surface characterization accuracy, escalating remote sensing from empirical methods to physical models. My research includes radiative transfer models of vegetation, and geochemical spectral-detection methodology.
  • Site Remediation Monitoring: Post-mining radioactive tailings and materials can severely impact ecosystem integrity and human health. Through spectral detections and change detection, remediation management benefits from hyperspectral imagery for characterising and monitoring environmentally contaminated sites.
