International Activities

The SGB cultivates many formal and informal relationships with international initiatives, institutions and organizations.  It has developed relationships with academia in Canada and internationally.

For example, the SGB was actively involved in the United Nations' Economic Commission for Africa symposium in Ethiopia in 2006, in the Terrafrica/Global Environment Facility Strategic Investment Program in Burkina Faso in 2007, and in a cadastral standards workshop in the Netherlands in 2008.

The SGB regularly hosts delegations from sister organizations from other countries who are interested in Canada's survey and land administration systems; recent delegations have hailed from China, Brazil and Thailand.

The SGB liaises with the Management Services and International Affairs Division of the Earth Sciences Sector in assisting other departments, such as Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), in advancing land tenure and cadastral reform in the developing world.

The SGB staff regularly present the results of SGB research and initiatives at international conferences, such as those hosted by the International Boundaries Research Unit (UK), the Federation International Geometre (Netherlands), the Nordic Association for Canadian Studies (Norway) and the American Association of Geographers (United States).
