On-board operations involving NRCan - Geological Survey of Canada scientists depict equipment preparation, including deploying of seismic gear, an aerial flight from the ship's helicopter to the accompanying U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy, and meetings in the ship's boardroom. |
The video depicts the people and faces behind the Canada-U.S. Arctic mission 2009: technical staff solving problems, scientists receiving instructions on safety and emergency procedures, technical teams at work in extreme conditions, and the captain and crew of the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent at work on the ship's bridge. Also shown are crew relaxing and playing musical instruments. |

St-Laurent breaking ice, stunning images of ice floes, sunrise over the ice, as well as views of the ship's bow crashing through ice, aerial photography of the Louis taken by the ship's helicopter and helicopter flights for ice reconnaissance. | The video shows several people on the deck of the Louis taking photographs of a solitary polar bear sauntering along the ice. The bear is watching the ship with suspicion as it sails past. Aboard the Louis, local marine mammal observers monitor wildlife and seismic operations stop when animals -- like this polar bear -- are near the ship. |
