Data

The Canadian Geographical Names Data Base (CGNDB) has been available via the Internet since 1994. In 2010, many geographical names data products became available under GeoBase initiative. They are available on the GeoGratis website.

The data is provided by provincial, territorial and federal partners, and managed by the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC) Secretariat at Natural Resources Canada.

You can also access the CGNDB via the online name query tool.  Type the name of a city, town, lake (or any other geographical feature).  Specify the type of feature you are searching for and the Province or Territory where it is located, and click "Submit Query". This will send a query to the CGNDB and return a list of places or features with that name.

Tools and Applications are also available to download data from the CGNDB for specific requirements.

For information regarding the data, please contact the GNBC Secretariat at geonames@NRCan.gc.ca.
