GeoGratis – What's New

New Wall Map of North Circumpolar Region (MCR0001)

June 2, 2017

This bilingual map at a scale of 1:9 000 000 shows the geography of the northern circumpolar region, north of approximately 55 degrees latitude. The map uses the azimuthal equidistant projection. All international boundaries, as well as the Canadian provincial and territorial boundaries and Canada's 200 nautical mile offshore exclusive economic zone are displayed on the map. National capital cities, other cities, towns, villages and hamlets along with some seasonally populated places are also shown. The map identifies a number of significant northern features, including the median sea ice extent from September 1981 to 2010, the tree line, undersea relief, land relief, the Magnetic North Pole, glaciers, ice fields and coastal ice shelves. Many of the physiographic and hydrographic features are also labelled.

New High-Resolution Digital Elevation Model generated from LiDAR data

April 21, 2017

Now available: the High Resolution Digital Elevation Model (HRDEM), at a resolution of 2 metres. The HRDEM consists of a Digital Terrain Model (DTM), a Digital Surface Model (DSM) and other derived data.   This first release covers 106,000 km2 (3%) of the 3.5 million km2 planned for the Canadian southern territory, and includes areas in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Manitoba.

This new product is generated from airborne LiDAR data acquired in partnership with provinces and territories to provide high accuracy data with minimum distortion.  The HRDEM is part of the CanElevation collection created in support of the National Elevation Strategy implemented by Natural Resources Canada.  This strategy aims to increase Canada’s coverage of high-resolution elevation data and increase product accessibility.

For more details consult the product specifications. You can download this data on the Open Government website. Use one of the following options to see the current inventory and to download the datasets: "View on map", projects footprints or datasets footprints in KML, Shapefile or ESRI REST formats.

National Hydro Network (NHN) - 389 new watersheds (WS)

February 24, 2017

Summary:

Publication of 389 NHN datasets, namely: 267 NHN-CL3 watersheds, 117 NHN-CL2 watersheds and 5 NHN-CL1 watersheds. With the publication of these new watersheds, the Canadian landmass is nearly entirely covered by data allowing the analysis of hydrological networks (NHN-CL2 or NHN-CL3), a task that will be completed by December 31st of 2017.

Details:

Within the framework of an agreement with the province of Quebec, 31 NHN-CL3 watersheds were produced using federal data. This completes the coverage of northern Quebec in NHN-CL3 or NHN_CL2 compliant.

With the competition of 74 new NHN_CL3 watersheds in Saskatchewan, all watersheds covering this province are now NHN-CL3 compliant.

With 29 new NHN_CL3 watersheds completed in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, more than 95% of watersheds covering the northern continental part of Canada are now NHN-CL3 compliant.

We also make available 51 new NHN_CL3 watersheds in the Atlantic Provinces: 2 watersheds in Prince Edward Island, 40 watersheds in Newfoundland and Labrador and 9 watersheds in Nova Scotia.

32 Canada/USA bi-national watersheds were regenerated as part of our data maintenance efforts (mainly data with better resolution).

Furthermore, 54 watersheds in NHN-CL2 or NHN-CL3 were produced to correct discrepancies, including 6 watersheds in Alberta due to the updated data of Fort McMurray.

In maintenance efforts, several watersheds were regenerated following watershed limits redefinitions.

For more information, please refer to the National Hydro Network (NHN) - Release Notes.
