The Polarimetric Workstation (PWS) is a user-friendly and efficient software package developed at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) for the optimum extraction of polarization information from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. Based on more than 25 years of polarimetric research, PWS is foremost an educational tool designed to introduce new users to the complex basis of polarimetry. The PWS allows users to analyse SAR data with popular, validated polarimetric techniques such as Poincaré Sphere representation, Van Zyl coefficient of variation, as well as the Cloude-Pottier and Touzi target scattering decompositions.

The first version of PWS was released in 2000 to prepare Canadian federal and provincial governments, educational institutions, and industry for the integration of polarimetric RADARSAT-2 into their research and operational activities. Since then, PWS has been licensed to more than thirty Canadian institutions; governmental and provincial departments, universities, industry. In order to further promote the effective and efficient use of polarimetric SAR data in Canada and around the world, CCRS is now making this educational tool available here for non commercial use.
