South Shore, Nova Scotia

Introduction
Hurricane Juan struck the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia at 12:10 am ADT on September 29, 2003. To assess the impacts of the hurricane along the South Shore we relied upon information and photographs taken by local residents and climbers from the Nova Scotia Climbing Club. A photo gallery is presented of pre- and post- Hurricane Juan images which illustrate the impacts of the hurricane at five shore locations marked on the adjacent map.

NS Map Location of five sites along the South Shore of Nova Scotia where impacts from Hurricane Juan are shown from in this photo gallery.

Ragged Harbour Beach, Queens County: (A) View from west end of the beach which was completely overwashed by waves, flattened and pushed landward into the backshore wetland. Before the storm the power poles were landward of the beach. By the time of the photo, October 24, 2003, the upper beach ridge had been rebuilt using road construction equipment.
