Geoscience for New Energy Supply

Canada requires new globally competitive, domestic energy sources to maintain and augment its economic prosperity. Shale-hosted petroleum and petroleum resources from frontier basins will become increasingly important components of Canada’s future energy mix. However, more information is needed on their resource potential, their producability and their environmental footprint to support future land use decisions.

The Geoscience for New Energy Supply (GNES) program was developed in August 2012 to:

  • develop standard best practice methodologies for assessing unconventional (low permeability) petroleum resources and their extent;
  • stimulate northern exploration investment and resource development through better definition of petroleum in frontier basins;
  • inform decision-making on land and ocean use in advance of new development proposals, by assessing energy resource potential in high priority ocean basins;
  • deliver new geoscience to inform economic and environmental policies and programs [e.g. National Energy Board, energy supply forecasts, minerals and energy resources assessments]); and,
  • coordinate a national dialogue among Canadian energy geoscience RD&D innovators on research priorities that promote targeted innovation, and increase national research capacity (Canadian Energy Geoscience Innovation Cluster [CEGIC]).

    This site provides information about over 12,000 geological names used in Canada. The names are from several sources, now stored in a single database. The names are of two types: lithological units and chronological units. The lexicon is a work in progress; some names remain to be added, others are incompletely described, and many descriptions require updating.
