How do Shippers use Carrier Emissions Data?

Shippers can use SmartWay carrier emissions rates at any time to compare carriers for contracting purposes.  At the end of each year, SmartWay shippers calculate their own freight carbon footprint using the emissions rates of the specific SmartWay carriers they worked with.

As a shipper Partner, you use a SmartWay FLEET (Fleet Efficiency and Emissions Tracking) Tool to submit your data and sign a Partner Agreement with Natural Resources Canada each year.  The FLEET Tool calculates your freight carbon footprint.

You can directly import information about all SmartWay carriers into your FLEET Tool.  This will make it easy for you to select your carriers from the list.  Next you will need to enter your activity level (i.e. kilometres and tonne-kilometres) for each carrier fleet you used in the previous year.  The Shipper FLEET Tool multiplies the activity level for each carrier by that carrier’s emissions performance levels, across each of the eight emissions categories.  The sum total of your carrier results produces an overall inventory for each of the eight emissions categories.  This is your freight emissions inventory, which reflects your freight carbon footprint.

Shippers can:

  • Identify carrier emission rates within the Shipper FLEET Tool or by viewing the Carrier Performance Level spreadsheet.
  • Estimate emissions reductions for shipper controlled strategies such as reduced packaging, weight reductions, or reducing miles, based on their carrier fleet mix.
  • Estimate the effects of modal shift, again using their own carrier base to compare different modes (e.g. multi-modal vs. truckload dry van).
