Marzouk Benali : Research scientist with the industry group at CanmetENERGY's research centre in Varennes.

My main areas of expertise are the intensification and optimization of industrial processes, bioseparations, and agricultural and forestry biorefining. In addition to having a passion for environmental protection and efficient use of energy, what fuels my enthusiasm for the job I do is being able to challenge the established limits of the science beyond its conventional boundries.

I am deeply committed to multi-and interdisciplinary open innovation which is the cornerstone to accelerate the development and implementation of environmentally sound technologies for forestry and agricultural processing sectors.

The main objective of this project is to develop the concept of fully integrated greenforest biorefinery and to establish its technical feasibility and economic viability.

In addition, this project aims at developing, validating and demonstrating the techniques and tools for rapid implementation of forest biorefinery in pulp and paper plants.

As project manager, I take full coordination of all scientific activities and the management of partnerships that include Canadian and foreign universities along with Canadian pulp and paper industries.

As project manager, I act as an actor in the attainment of certain scientific aspects of the project. Thus, I am the centre of gathering all the necessary multidisciplinary expertise involved in the project.

The integration of biorefinery in existing pulp and paper plants is certainly an attractive approach. However, to be economically viable, integrated biorefinery facilities must be at the forefront of energy efficiency. The key research will mainly be directed towards the development of optimal strategies for the establishment of biorefinery units in Kraft plants based on real cases. Finally, using biomass from trees and annual agricultural crop residues, forest biorefinery is the right thing to do that became a reality and will be the economic engine of the pulp and paper industry.
