Sustainability makes good business sense.

We all want to do our part to wisely use natural resources and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while saving money on wasted energy. Buying more energy-efficient goods is a great way to start.

Here is some information that will help consumers choose products that help conserve resources and reduce energy costs at the same time.

1. Where energy use is concerned, everything’s related. When we use electrical appliances, we use energy. That energy is produced by power plants that emit carbon dioxide and other GHGs. When released, these chemicals pollute our air and water and harm our ecosystems. The more each of us can do to reduce energy use, the less we’ll pollute.

2. Conservation is easy. While it might be hard to live completely pollutant free, any of us can take simple steps to reduce the amount of energy we use. Energy-efficient products save customers money, consume fewer resources and help reduce pollution.

3. GHGs contribute to climate change. By now, we’ve all heard how GHGs—such as methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide trap—extra heat from the sun in our atmosphere and contribute to global warming. People who choose energy-efficient products consume fewer natural resources and help fight climate change by curbing GHG emissions.

4. A tonne is a big deal. Scientists who measure GHGs often talk in terms of tonnes of emissions. Most of the rest of us find that idea pretty abstract. Help your customers understand a bit more about the impact of GHG emissions with these equivalencies.

  • A tonne of GHG emissions is about the amount released by an average Canadian vehicle over 4,000 kilometres of driving.
  • If you wanted to remove a tonne of GHG emissions from the environment, you’d have to plant 109 trees.
