Registration and publication of Regulations Amending Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations

Amendment 5 to the Energy Efficiency Regulations was registered on April 26, 2001 and published on May 9, 2001.

Amendment 5 was published in the Canada Gazette, Part II, or SOR/2001-150 on May 9, 2001.

In Amendment 5, refrigerators, combination refrigerator-freezers and freezers were prescribed as a regulated product under the Energy Efficiency Regulations which came into effect on February 3, 1995. Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has amended these Regulations to establish minimum efficiency levels that are identical to those that were published in the U.S. Federal Register on April 28, 1997 and which will be implemented in the U.S. on July 1, 2001.

Effective dates

Energy efficiency standards

For refrigerators or combination refrigerator-freezers other than Type 3 combination refrigerator-freezers with a total refrigerated volume > 410.65 L and < 521.10 L ( > 14.5 cu.ft. and < 18.4 cu.ft.), the effective date for the new energy efficiency standards is July 1, 2001.

For Type 3 combination refrigerator-freezers with a total refrigerated volume > 410.65 L and < 521.10 L (> 14.5 cu.ft. and < 18.4 cu.ft.), the effective date for the new energy efficiency standards is December 31, 2002.

For freezers, the effective date for the new energy efficiency standards is July 1, 2001.

Energy performance test procedure

For refrigerators, combination refrigerator-freezers and freezers, the effective date for the new CAN/CSA-C300-00 energy performance test procedure is July 1, 2001.
