Regulatory Definition

A machine, with or without an integral refrigerant condenser, that is designed to use a refrigerant cycle to remove heat from a liquid and to reject the heat to a cooling medium.

Energy Efficiency Standard

Under standard conditions
A packaged water chiller must meet the minimum coefficient of performance (COP) and integrated part-load value (IPLV) applicable to the product as per Path A or Path B of CSA C743-09, Table 10, as shown below.

  1. COP shall be calculated as follows:
    1. absorption: COP = standard rating capacity (kW)/thermal power input (kW);
    2. centrifugal, rotary: COP = standard rating capacity (kW)/total power input (kW); and
    3. reciprocating or scroll: COP = standard rating capacity (kW)/total power input (kW).
  2. Compliance with this standard may be obtained by meeting the requirements of Path A or Path B provided that both the COP and IPLV of Path A or Path B are met.
  3. All Path B chillers shall be equipped with demand-limiting control capability.
  4. N/A = not applicable.
  5. NR = no minimum requirement.

Under nonstandard conditions (section 7 of CSA C743-09)

Water-cooled centrifugal chillers that are not designed for operation under ARI 550/590 standard test conditions (and thus cannot be tested to meet the requirements of Table 10) with 6.7 °C leaving chilled water temperature, 29.4 °C entering condenser water temperature, and 0.054 L/s•kW condenser water flow shall have minimum full-load COP and  non standard part load values (NPLV) ratings adjusted using the following equation:

Adjusted minimum full-load COP rating = (full-load COP from Table 10) × Kadj

Adjusted minimum NPLV rating = (IPLV from Table 10) × Kadj

The adjusted full-load COP and NPLV values shall be applicable only over the following full-load design ranges:

  1. minimum leaving chiller-water temperature: 3.3 °C;
  2. maximum condenser entering water temperature: 39 °C; and
  3. condenser water flow: 0.036 to 0.0721 L/s•kW.

Chillers designed to operate outside of these ranges and applications utilizing fluids or solutions with secondary coolants (e.g., glycol solutions or brines) with a freeze point of –2.8 °C or lower for freeze protection are not covered in regard to a minimum energy performance standard.

Energy Efficiency Reporting Requirements

  • type of product (chiller);
  • brand name;
  • model number;
  • manufacturer;
  • name of the certification body or province whose verification mark will be on the product;
  • net cooling/heating capacity, in kW (tons);
  • coefficient of performance;
  • compliance Path for the energy-efficiency standard, namely, Path A or Path B of Table 10 to CSA C743-09; and
  • integrated part-load value or non-standard part-load value and a list of non-standard conditions.
