Natural Resources Canada: 2012-13 to 2016-17 Strategic Evaluation Plan

In the Government of Canada, evaluation is the systematic collection and analysis of evidence on the outcomes of programs to make judgments about their relevance, performance and alternative ways to deliver them or to achieve the same results.

The following table is a summary of NRCan's 2012-13 to 2016-17 Evaluation Plan that was approved by the Deputy Minister on February 23, 2012.

Like all federal departments and agencies, NRCan is balancing the challenge of undertaking comprehensive evaluation coverage of program spending with sufficient depth of analysis to inform decision-making with a view to improve program delivery and resource allocation.

This risk-based plan was developed based on the following guidelines:

  1. using the Department's Program Activity Architecture as the main guide to plan future evaluations;
  2. ensuring comprehensive coverage of departmental expenditures over a five-year cycle; and
  3. providing evidence to inform renewal decisions for grant and contribution programs within broader evaluations.

The NRCan Evaluation Plan will be updated annually and posted on this Internet site.

Completed evaluation reports, including recommendations and management responses and action plans are also posted on this site. The implementation of the management action plans is tracked by the Evaluation Committee.
