Renewing your Fireworks Operator Certificate

Once you are certified by the ERD to use display fireworks or special effect pyrotechnics you will receive a letter in the mail at least two months prior to the expiry date on your certificate reminding you of the expiry date and the instructions required to renew.

If you have not received your reminder to renew and your certificate is going to expire or has expired already, you can submit an Application of Renewal of Fireworks Operator Certificate (F17-06).

Upgrading your Fireworks Operator Certificate

To upgrade your Fireworks Operator Certificate to a higher level you must submit an application for upgrade to the ERD.

F17-02:  Application for Modification of Fireworks Operator Certificate

Make sure your application includes the completed application form, work journal, letters of recommendation, photo and the required fee of $100.00. Incomplete applications will delay processing times.

Upgrade requirements

Display Supervisor
  • Certification as a Display Assistant
  • Participated in a minimum of three shows within five years
  • Letter of recommendation from Lead Supervisor in Charge
Display Supervisor with Endorsements
  • Certification as a Display Supervisor
  • First endorsement - act as Lead Supervisor in Charge for at least three shows
  • For each endorsement - participated in at least three shows in the past five years in which you have assisted with displays that include the endorsement
  • Letter of recommendation from Lead Supervisor in Charge
Senior Pyrotechnician
  • Certification as a Pyrotechnician
  • Work Journal
  • 3 Letters of recommendation from supervisors (Senior Pyrotechnicians, Special Effects Pyrotechnicians or Special Effects Pyrotechnician – detonating cord)
Special Effects Pyrotechnician
  • Certification as a Senior Pyrotechnician
  • Work Journal
  • 3 Letters of recommendation from supervisors (Special Effects Pyrotechnicians or Special Effects Pyrotechnician – detonating cord)
Special Effects Pyrotechnician – detonating cord
  • Certification as a Special Effects Pyrotechnician
  • Work Journal
  • 3 Letters of recommendation from supervisors (Special Effects Pyrotechnician – detonating cord)
