Client’s questions or Sales requests – What may be considered suspicious sales requests

Main question Basic underlying questions Is anything suspicious?
Does the customer fit the usual profile?
  • Is it a new customer ?
  • Is the person purchasing the product on behalf of a company an actual authorized employee of that company ? Such persons if unknown should be “authenticated” by making a verification call to a known customer official
  • Is there a reluctance or refusal to give a “landline” telephone number or address ?
  • Does the enquirer lack proper business acumen or refuse to give trade & bank references ?
  • Is there a reluctance or refusal to provide an order in writing ?
  • Is the order destined for a company which is not known and does not have a company website and which cannot be traced in trade directories ?
  • After being refused, the same enquiry comes through another channel.

Is the order unusually small, large, repetitious or out of season?
  • Can the customer explain why ?
  • Does this explanation make sense ?

Is the intended use of chemical responsible?
  • Is the customer at ease when describing why he needs the chemical ?
  • Does the reply make sense ?

Is the mode of payment logic?
  • Is the payment done as usual ?
  • Is the payment in cash, even for a large order ?

Does the mode of delivery or of picking up fit?
  • Does the customer insist on picking up in person, even a large quantity ?
  • Do the delivery or transport costs exceed the cost of the goods themselves ?
  • Is the request for delivery via a dubious or complicated transit route ?
  • Is asking for delivery in non-trade or unlabelled packages ?
  • Is it our regular carrier’s driver ?
  • Is it indeed the same customer ?
