OTTAWA — On Wednesday, September 21, the 2011 State of Canada’s Forests report was tabled in Parliament. Each year, this authoritative report provides an overview of Canada’s forests and forest sector, with the latest statistics accompanied by expert trend summaries.

This year, through two complementary web features, readers can find out how investments by the Government of Canada have been contributing to the transformation of the forest sector, one that is now focusing on niche markets, non-traditional products and emerging technologies. Readers will also learn why Canada’s forests need to be understood and managed in new ways as the result of market interest in the environmental attributes of forest products, forests facing new threats from global pressures such as climate change, and an evolving definition of sustainability.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of this national report, demonstrating the ongoing commitment of the Government of Canada to informing Canadians about the state of their forests today, while helping build a common vision and approach for tomorrow.
