Government of Canada Supporting Forestry Research and Innovation
The Canadian Forest Service
The mandate of Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian Forest Service is to promote the sustainable development of Canada’s forests and foster a dynamic forest sector in Canada.
For over a century, the Canadian Forest Service has conducted research on the health of our forests in order to meet the needs of the nation’s forest sector without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Today, through the analysis of scientific and economic data, the Canadian Forest Service plays a leading role by proposing a new model for the forest sector that relies on two important concepts: sustainability and competitiveness.
Staffed with scientists, technicians, economists and policy analysts, as well as other dedicated professionals, the Canadian Forest Service is developing and sharing knowledge on forestry and bringing stakeholders together to address regional, national and international issues related to forestry.
Initiatives to Support Research and Innovation
Canadian Wood Fibre Centre — Launched in March 2006 by Natural Resources Canada, this organization seeks to improve forest productivity and wood fibre quality and increase the value of our forest resources. Researchers from the Canadian Forest Service are working at this Centre.
FPInnovations — Created in April 2007 by merging three Canadian forest research institutes to harmonize forestry research, integrate innovation into the value chain and support the industry’s short-term renewal and long-term diversification. Located at the Canadian Wood Fibre Centre, FPInnovations is the largest public/private forestry research institute in the world.
Canadian Network in Biomass Innovation — Coordinates the research and development activities of the Government of Canada in the areas of bioenergy, biofuels, industrial bioproducts and bioprocesses. The Network brings together several science-oriented federal departments under the guidance of NRCan’s Office of Energy Research and Development.
