Government of Canada Welcomes International Energy Agency’s Review of Energy Policies

OTTAWA The Honourable Christian Paradis, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, welcomed the recommendations in Canada – 2009 Review, the International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) review of Canada’s energy policies that was released today.

“Overall, the review provides a fair and balanced picture of Canada’s energy sector,” said Minister Paradis. “In fact, many of the recommendations underline actions this Government is already undertaking to protect our natural riches as well as our recovering economy.”

The review recognizes Canada’s diverse portfolio of natural resources and highlights the work that is being done in the areas of carbon capture and storage, energy efficiency and streamlining environmental regulatory processes.

“Economic competitiveness includes leadership on the environment, and we are ensuring Canada remains a world leader in the development of a number of key technologies from carbon capture and storage to the use of forest and agricultural by-products to generate clean energy,” added Minister Paradis.

The Government of Canada is working closely with the provinces and territories, as well as its international trading partners, to develop and implement these forward-looking energy policies.

The IEA conducts in-depth reviews of member countries’ energy policies every four to five years. The last review of Canada was released in 2005.
