Government of Canada Invests in Wind Energy in Ontario

CHATHAM-KENT, ONTARIO — Ontario is now benefiting from a new source of clean, renewable energy, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada. The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today that Invenergy’s Raleigh Wind Energy Centre will receive up to $24 million over ten years through the ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program.

“Today’s announcement is another example of our Government’s action to increase the supply of clean, renewable energy for Canadians,” said Minister Oliver. “This clean energy project at the Raleigh wind farm is helping to create high-quality jobs and a sustainable energy source for Ontario’s future.”

“Investments in clean energy technologies are a key part of our balanced approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and positioning Canada at the forefront of clean energy technology,” said Dave Van Kesteren, Member of Parliament for Chatham-Kent.

The Raleigh Wind Energy Centre Project, developed, owned and operated by Invenergy LLC, consists of 52 wind turbines and is expected to produce enough energy per year to power 20,000 homes in Ontario. Electricity produced from this farm will help to provide environmental and economic benefits to local communities.

The $1.5-billion ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program provides a one cent per kilowatt-hour incentive over ten years, with the goal of increasing Canada’s renewable electricity capacity by more than 4,000 megawatts — enough to power one million homes. Canada’s Economic Action Plan provided an additional $2.4 billion to support the development and deployment of cleaner energy technologies and supporting infrastructure, including the Clean Energy Fund and the Green Infrastructure Fund.
