Minister Oliver Discusses Business Opportunities

TORONTO — The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources, today highlighted the many business opportunities provided by Canada’s vast natural resources during a speech to the Toronto Board of Trade. Minister Oliver discussed the contributions of our diverse natural resource sectors such as mining, forestry and energy to the Canadian economy.

“Our natural resource sectors have contributed greatly to Canada’s economic strength and resilience,” said Minister Oliver. “Our abundant natural resources can ensure continued prosperity for Ontario and Canada, now and into the future.”

“Millions of Canadians are affected by the growth of the resource industries — either through employment or by owning shares of companies in their mutual funds, pension funds or RRSPs,” he added. “With our strong economic fundamentals, Canada is also creating an attractive and positive market for foreign investment.”

“The energy, mining and forestry sectors accounted for $140 billion in real GDP in 2010. They are supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs in communities right across the country,” said Minister Oliver. “We all stand to benefit enormously when we develop our natural resources in a socially and environmentally responsible way.”
