Harper Government Supports a Healthier Environment in Amherstburg

AMHERSTBURG, ON — Jeff Watson, Member of Parliament for Essex, and Harold Usher, councillor for the City of London, Ontario and a member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM's) National Board of Directors, today announced an important investment through the Green Municipal Fund^TM to improve capacity and technology at the Amherstburg Pollution Control Plant.

“Through the Green Municipal Fund, our Government is helping municipalities create a cleaner and healthier environment for its citizens,” said MP Watson. “Our investment, in partnership with the FCM, will help Amherstburg grow as a place where people will want to visit, live, work and invest.”

Upgrades to key operational components of the Amherstburg Pollution Control Plant will make it run more efficiently. There were also improvements made to the dewatering system and the installation of an ultraviolet disinfection system and an odour control system. Thanks to a $4.4 million investment, these innovative technologies will allow the plant to perform more efficiently, reducing power requirements, chemical feed, and operations and maintenance costs.

The Amherstburg Pollution Control Plant is the largest of the town’s six sewage treatment facilities and treats the majority of the sewage generated by the town’s urban area.

The Government of Canada endowed the FCM with $550 million to establish the Green Municipal Fund^TM. The Fund supports partnerships and leveraging of both public and private-sector funding to reach higher standards of air, water and soil quality, and climate protection.
