R-2000 Homes: Continuing a Proud Tradition

Backgrounder

Created 30 years ago, R-2000 revolutionized how Canadian homes are built. It set the standard for new home energy efficiency, making Canada the world leader in building technology.

Today, R-2000 is even better. The R-2000 standard has been updated, making
2012 R-2000 homes twice as energy-efficient as before. R-2000 remains the standard against which all other homes can be judged.

  • A 2012 R-2000 home uses as little as 50% less energy than the same home built to the 2005 Standard.
  • The home is also exceptionally comfortable, with even temperatures throughout, no cold or hot spots and no drafts in winter.
  • It is noticeably quieter.

That’s not all. R-2000 homes have healthier indoor air quality thanks to energy-efficient methods, a whole-house mechanical ventilation system and the use of “green” products protect the indoor environment.

And there is more! R-2000 uses a certification process that gives homebuyers the utmost confidence in their homes.

  • R-2000 is backed by the Government of Canada. It is a joint collaboration between Natural Resources Canada and the homebuilding industry.
  • R-2000 builders are trained in R-2000 building techniques and licensed by the Government of Canada.
  • Every R-2000 home is evaluated, inspected and tested by a government-licensed energy advisor before, during and after construction, including computer modelling and air tightness testing.
  • Once completed, every R-2000 home is certified by the Government of Canada.
