Government of Canada Invests in Wind Energy in New Brunswick

LAMÈQUE, NEW BRUNSWICK — New Brunswick will soon be benefiting from a new source of clean, renewable energy thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada. The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, announced today that the Lamèque Wind Power Project, located on the Isle of Lamèque, will receive up to $13.79 million over 10 years through the ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program.

“Today’s announcement is another example of our Government’s action to increase the supply of clean, renewable energy for Canadians,” said Minister Ashfield. “This clean energy technology project at the Lamèque wind farm is helping to create high-quality jobs and a sustainable energy source for New Brunswick’s future.”

The Lamèque Wind Power Project, developed, owned and operated by ACCIONA Energy North America, consists of 30 wind turbines and is expected to produce enough energy per year to power 8,000 homes in New Brunswick. Electricity produced from this park will help to provide environmental and economic benefits to local Atlantic communities.

“The Lamèque Wind Power Project is a huge win for everyone involved — ACCIONA, La Coopérative d’Energie Renouvelable de Lamèque Ltée, the First Nations communities in New Brunswick and the supportive people of the Acadian Peninsula — and is possible, in part, due to the Government of Canada’s support,” said Dan DuBois, Chief Development Officer for ACCIONA Wind Energy Canada. “ACCIONA has remained dedicated to the Lamèque Wind Power Project, and we are excited to now be able to move forward with construction.”

The $1.5-billion ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program provides a one cent per kilowatt-hour incentive, with the goal of increasing Canada’s renewable electricity capacity by more than 4,000 megawatts — enough to power a million homes. Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this investment with an additional $2.4 billion to support the development and deployment of cleaner energy technologies and supporting infrastructure, including the Clean Energy Fund and the Green Infrastructure Fund.
