Statement by the Honourable Christian Paradis, P.C., M.P., Minister of Natural Resources On the Senate Committee Report on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources

OTTAWA — As Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, I want to take this opportunity to thank the Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources for its report on Canada’s offshore drilling operations.

The Committee found that “Canada’s offshore industry is subject to a regulatory regime that is modern, up-to-date and among the most efficient and stringent in the world.” I have long maintained that our system is indeed one of the best in the world. We have strong environmental laws and standards, a robust safety regime and experienced independent offshore regulators. Those who wish to operate in Canada’s offshore industry must have equipment and training that meet strict standards, and this country’s regulators will not allow any offshore activity unless they are convinced that the environment and the safety of workers will be protected.

Our Government is committed to maintaining the highest standards when it comes to our offshore regulatory regime.
