Minister Paradis Announces New Clean Energy Project in British Columbia
RICHMOND, B.C. — The Government of Canada is investing in Canada’s first high-efficiency system for producing renewable energy from food and yard waste, a project which will see up to 27,000 tonnes of food and yard waste per year diverted from British Columbia landfill sites.
The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Natural Resources, joined by Paul Sellew, founder and CEO of Harvest Power, today announced that Fraser Richmond Soil and Fibre Ltd., a subsidiary of Harvest Power Inc., will receive up to $4 million through the Clean Energy Fund, over two years, for the clean energy demonstration project.
“Investments in clean energy technologies are a key part of our balanced approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and climate change,” said Minister Paradis. “Our Government is investing in this project to encourage clean energy innovation and help create high-quality jobs for Canadians.”
The project will utilize an innovative high-solids anaerobic digestion (HSAD) technology to turn food and yard waste into renewable energy and high-quality, marketable compost.
“Fraser Richmond and Harvest Power are honoured to be recognized by The Government of Canada and its Clean Energy Fund,” said Mr. Sellew. “This funding will allow us to accelerate the development of Canada’s first commercial-scale HSAD operation, which will provide a basis for future economic growth, jobs and a cleaner environment.”
As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Clean Energy Fund is investing $795 million in clean energy technology development and demonstration over five years. The Government of Canada’s support will help launch nearly 20 projects under the renewable and clean energy portion of the Clean Energy Fund, totalling up to $146 million. Three carbon capture and storage projects have also been announced, totalling $466 million from the fund.
