Government of Canada Invests In Better Living Conditions in Nunavut

OTTAWA — Residents of Nunavut will benefit from a series of land surveys commissioned by the Government of Canada over the past year which have opened the door to improved living conditions for dozens of communities.

The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Canada’s Minister of Health, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today that work has been completed on eight contracts issued through the Surveyor General Branch, valued at $1.8 million.

“Our Government is building the infrastructure needed to clear the way for new home construction for Nunavummiut,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “More than 1,800 lots have been surveyed — creating jobs in the local area as well as being a big step toward creating better living conditions for many people in Nunavut communities.”

This is the most significant land infrastructure survey project undertaken in the North. The results of this work are the first steps in determining where communities will be developed, to help addresses overcrowded living conditions in the North.  The surveys are the vital link to home ownership and development.

The Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program is delivered by the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor). SINED promotes economic development in the territories, by strengthening driver sectors and diversifying the economy.  It will help create important economic opportunities for people living and working in Canada's northern communities.
