Mining Information Kit for Aboriginal Communities

The Mining Information Kit for Aboriginal Communities informs Aboriginal communities across Canada about the stages of the mining cycle from early exploration to mine closure. The information kit can help Aboriginal peoples learn about mining activities and identify the many opportunities that mining can bring to their communities.

This kit is designed in four modules corresponding to the main stages of the mining cycle. It provides examples of community experiences, positive relationships and partnerships with mining companies. It also outlines the regulatory process, to ensure Aboriginal peoples are well informed about the economic, social and environmental effects, benefits and opportunities involved.

The kit is the product of a partnership between Natural Resources Canada, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, the Mining Association of Canada, and the Canadian Aboriginal Minerals Association.

Our Community . . . Our Future: Mining and Aboriginal Communities

The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario are pleased to present the information video entitled Our Community . . . Our Future: Mining and Aboriginal Communities.

Filmed on-site in northern Ontario, this video takes the viewer through the entire mining sequence from geological survey work to the operation and eventual closure and rehabilitation of a mine. It was produced by Natural Resources Canada (Minerals and Metals Sector and Earth Sciences Sector) and the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines with support from a number of First Nation communities and exploration and mining companies in Ontario.

The governments of Canada and Ontario are committed to helping rural and remote Aboriginal communities become stronger and more prosperous. This video provides Aboriginal peoples with an educational tool to raise awareness and help them make informed decisions about their participation in minerals and metals activities.

The video is available in English, French, Cree, Oji-Cree and Ojibwa. We hope you enjoy it.
