Regulations for Federally Administered Territories

Introduction

In the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, the Government of Canada, through Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), is responsible for the administration of Crown lands, including mineral properties. INAC issues and administers mineral title pursuant to the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Mining Regulations under the Territorial Lands Act. INAC monitors and inspects to ensure compliance with legislation.

Yukon finalized the Devolution Transfer Agreement with the government of Canada in October 2001. A new Yukon Act came into effect On April 1, 2003, giving the Government of Yukon direct control over a greater variety of provincial-type responsibilities including on public lands and mineral resources.

Northwest Territories and Nunavut Mining Regulations (formerly the Canada Mining Regulations)

Since the release of the discussion paper “Proposed Amendments to the Northwest Territories Mining Royalty Regime in the Canada Mining Regulations” in August 1996, a few federal departments and the Government of Northwest Territories have been involved in the review process. Today, INAC is still working with the Department of Justice on the proposed amendments which are intended to simplify, clarify, and modernize the Regulations instead of changing the fundamental principles. For detailed information and progress, contact the INAC Public Enquiries Contact Centre.
