Coal - 2010 Annual Review and Outlook

  • Highlights
    • Canada’s coal production and exports had a strong recovery in 2010. Production increased 7.8% and exports grew by 22.3%.
    • Global demand for coking coal continued to be strong and prices stayed high at US$200-$230 per tonne (t) throughout the year, and continued to climb early in 2011. Canadian producers achieved an average realized price of $199/t for coking coal exports.
    • The Canadian coal mining sector plays an important role in Canada’s economy as a provider of close to 10% of the country’s primary energy, as a direct employer of more than 7100 people, and as a contributor of more than $1 billion to Canada’s Gross Domestic Product.
    • Coal is one of the top dry bulk commodities hauled by rail (about 35 million tonnes [Mt] in 2010) and handled by ports (approximately 45 Mt in 2010).
