  • Highlights

    • Canada is the world’s largest potash producer and exporter, accounting for more than one third of world production and exports.
    • Canada’s potash production bounced back from the 2009 depression. Production in 2010 amounted to 15.6 million tonnes (Mt) of potassium chloride (KCl) valued at $5.7 billion, which ranked potash first among all Canadian minerals in terms of 2010 production value.
    • Canada exported 15.5 Mt of KCl in 2010 with an export unit value of $335 per tonne (t).
    • In August 2010, BHP Billiton (BHP) made a bid to take over Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PotashCorp). The Government of Canada did not approve the deal as it did not meet the net benefit criteria under the Investment Canada Act. BHP withdrew its bid in November 2010.
