Lead - 2010 Annual Review and Outlook

  • Highlights
    • Canada continued as an important producer and supplier of refined lead, ranking sixth in the world in 2010.
    • Canadian mines produced 64 999 tonnes (t) of lead in concentrate in 2010, a 5.5% decrease compared to 2009.  World mine output increased slightly to 4.092 million tonnes (Mt).
    • Global demand for refined lead rebounded sharply in 2010 after a post-crisis decrease in 2009. The world consumed an estimated 9.42 Mt of lead, a 7% increase compared to 8.8 Mt in 2009. Demand growth was strong in China (9.1%), South Korea (21.9%), and Thailand (16.1%). Europe saw growth of 5.2% while demand in the United States grew by 2.3%.
    • In Canada, primary lead is produced mainly as a co-product of zinc mining. The recycling of lead, mainly from depleted car batteries, is an important source of refined lead, representing about 61% of Canada’s total refined lead production in 2010.
