Recycled Metals - 2010 Annual Review and Outlook

  • Highlights
    • Total recycled metal waste and scrap exported from Canada in 2010 weighed 5.9 million tonnes (Mt) valued at $3.6 billion. Exported slag, ash and residue containing metal weighed 0.6 Mt valued at $81 million.
    • Total recycled metal waste and scrap imported to Canada in 2010 weighed 3.3 Mt valued at $2.9 billion. Imported slag, ash and residue containing metal weighed 0.5 Mt valued at $164 million.
    • Exports of nonferrous recycled metals in 2010 were higher than in the previous year, but lower than in 2007 and 2008.
    • The United States continued to be Canada’s largest trading partner (77% of all exports and 94% of all imports) in recycled nonferrous waste and scrap, which is virtually unchanged from 2009; however, trade in nonferrous ash, slag and residue did decline to 81% of all exports and 69% of all imports.
    • Canada’s share of global imports of precious metal waste and scrap in 2010 was 14%, second to Germany’s share of 23%. From 2008 to 2010, Canada imported more of this commodity group than any other country.
    • From the beginning of 2009 to the end of 2010, the values of recycled aluminum, copper, and stainless steel scrap were up, especially for the latter two metals.
