What is PICon?
PICon, Pipeline Integrity Internet Icon, provides information on pipeline issues. Registration is required to access PICon and the registration is free.
The current pipeline systems in Canada represent approximately a $100 billion investment measured in replacement costs. Investment in the recently commissioned and planned pipeline projects under federal jurisdiction is in excess of $10 billion. The annual production of oil and gas in Canada is valued at approximately $40 billion, while almost all of it is being shipped by pipelines.
Pipelines are the safest method of transporting huge volumes of oil and gas. Because many pipelines use corridors adjacent to major highways, railways, waterways and populated areas, safety and pipeline integrity are important international concerns. To ensure the sustainability of Canada’s oil and gas production and transmission infrastructure, it is in the interest of governments and companies to work to reduce or limit the impact of pipelines on the environment while ensuring maximum continued economic contribution from new and existing pipelines.
PICon's objectives are to disseminate information online:
- To improve the reliability and reduce the environmental impact of oil and gas pipelines;
- To enhance the economic position, security of supply, and deliverability of energy resources;
- To maximize the economic, safe life of the aging pipeline infrastructure; and
- To contribute to the safety and security of the general public.
