National Mining Week May 9-13, 2011

Canadian Mining Innovation Council (CMIC)

What is CMIC?

CMIC is a network of industry, academic and government leaders whose purpose is to improve the competitiveness of a responsible Canadian mining industry by strengthening mining research excellence across Canada.

CMIC’s overarching objectives are to:

  • increase mining research, innovation and commercialization efforts in order to strengthen Canada’s pre-eminent role as a global leader in mineral exploration, mining, and knowledge-based services and technologies; and
  • increase the supply of highly qualified graduates from mining and earth sciences faculties to meet the significant demand today and into the future of industry, governments, and academia.

CMIC will provide an overarching forum for the Canadian mining and research community to enable better communication, collaboration and action on strategic priorities across Canada and globally. It will complement and link with existing initiatives and research centres, as well as other research agencies.

What is under way?

The success of Canadian mining depends on our ability to innovate. The CMIC Transition Board developed a Pan-Canadian Mining Research and Innovation Strategy, consisting of goals, expected results, and draft actions in five priority areas:

  • Targeted Areas for Research and Innovation
  • People and Skills
  • Collaboration
  • Innovation Systems and Culture
  • Brand, Visibility and Reputation

The Strategy was presented to federal, provincial and territorial Mines and Energy Ministers at their 2008 annual conference and was unanimously endorsed.

The Strategy has set as its vision that “Canada is a Global Leader in the Mining Industry Through Leading–Edge Research and Innovation”. This can be achieved through the unified commitment and support of industry, society and government. It is a vision that everyone can help support to keep innovation happening in mining.
