Eligibility Requirements

Before applying, candidates should be familiar with the CAN/CGSB 48.9712.2006 and ISO 9712:2005 standards. These standards supersede CAN/CGSB-48.9712-2000. They are available in English and French and can be purchased from the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) at this address:

Non-destructive testing (NDT) candidates may challenge examinations in the following methods:

  • Industrial Radiography, Ultrasonics and Eddy Current Levels 1, 2 and 3;
  • Magnetic Particle and Liquid Penetrant, Levels 2 and 3;
  • X-ray Fluorescence, Levels 1 and 2; and
  • Visual Testing, Level 1*

* This method will be implemented for certification in the near future. Direct unaided visual tests and visual tests carried out during the application of another NDT method are excluded.

Although NDT candidates seeking certification at Levels 1, 2 or 3 do not need to provide evidence of education to establish their eligibility, it is recommended that they have at least a secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent.

To be eligible for certification, candidates must have passed the qualification examinations and must meet the minimum requirements. NDT experience may be acquired before or after successfully completing the qualification examinations. Examination results remain valid for five years.
