The Emerging and Defence Materials Program develops knowledge and expertise in the fabrication of next-generation materials and products that contribute to the protection and security of Canadians. Developed technology is transferred to Canadian manufacturers with the objective of supporting an indigenous, autonomous and competitive industry. New testing and evaluation techniques such as computational modelling and materials testing methodologies are also being developed.

Current activities in this program can be described under three broad categories:

Armour Materials and Prototype Development

  • Advanced defence products and technologies are developed and transferred to industry for development in Canada in both the near term (within five years) and the longer term (within 15 years), for example, an advanced ceramic composite system using nanotechnology.
  • Development of high-strength steel plate with nano-microstructure, and heat treatment of advanced steels for armour vehicle applications, as well as multilayered composite material with improved ballistic and blast resistance.
  • Development of technologies to monitor the corrosion behaviour of military vehicles, and to test and evaluate methodologies for characterizing potential armour products.

Materials and Technologies for Shipbuilding

  • Scientific support for the implementation of new innovations, materials and evaluation technologies, including development of effective welding/joining technologies using modern processes.
  • Evaluation of corrosion properties of steels in marine environments.
  • Establishment of repair/maintenance procedures for navy platforms.

Emerging Materials

  • Development of high electrical conductive transmission cables using nanotechnology.
  • Development of new materials and fabrication procedures for small and medium-sized enterprises.
