Figure 1 is a stacked bar chart showing employment in the Canadian mining and minerals sector from 2001 to 2011 inclusive. Overall employment has declined over the decade from around 380 000 employees in 2001 to 320 000 in 2011. Employment in mining and quarrying has increased approximately 5000 over the same period, while that in nonmetallic mineral product manufacturing has declined by approximately 4000. The major declines, however, have come in the primary metal manufacturing and fabricated metal product manufacturing sectors, with each losing approximately 30 000 employees over the decade.
