4.4.1

Provide staff with new tools and training to promote green procurement
of goods and services, during 1998.

Mar 31/99

Promotes sustainable development by providing employees with tools
and information to procure environmentally friendly goods and services.

NRCan will participate in government-wide efforts to implement
mechanisms for eco- efficient procurement, and as part of SDS
- Now and for the Future
, will prepare a strategy to promote
the use of eco-efficient goods and services within its own operations.

4.4.2

Purchase green power generated from renewable and alternative energy,
by 1998.

Mar 31/99

Reduces greenhouse gas emissions and provides market opportunities
for renewable energy technologies.

In 1998, NRCan signed a ten- year agreement to purchase 10,000
MWh of wind-generated electricity annually from ENMAX, Calgary's
electricity supplier. This arrangement is intended to displace coal-based
electricity with electricity from environmentally-friendlier sources
for NRCan's facilities in Alberta.

Beyond this commitment, NRCan has negotiated 10-year agreements
on behalf of the Government of Canada for the production of about
50,000 MWh annually of wind-generated electricity for federal facilities
in Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island.
