4.1.1

By 2000, review and upgrade NRCan's Environmental Management
System to be compatible with international standards (ie, ISO 14000
series).

and internationally accepted standards into NRCan operations.

NRCan will continually improve its environmental, health and safety
performance by measuring key characteristics of activities and operations
and adjusting programs and methods as needed, according to measurement

system consistent with government-wide frameworks.

Distributing a Departmental Environmental Protection Guide on manager
and employee best practices.

Improves accessibility and enhances understanding of information
concerning Environmental Assessment and Protection Policies.

NRCan will continue to improve environmental, health and safety
compliance and awareness within the Department, and has committed
in SDS- Now and for the Future
to update the Environmental Protection Guide by 2002. NRCan has
committed to report on the implementation progress of the Departmental
Environmental Policy (2000) by 2002.

4.1.3

By 1999, create a Web site to publicize the Department's environmental
management system and prepare an environmental progress report.

Facilitates the communication of environmental data to NRCan employees
and the general public.

NRCan remains committed to responsible management and continuous
improvement. In this regard, NRCan has committed to provide stakeholders
with access to its Sustainable Development Action Items Management
System ( SD-AIMS ), a reporting system for sustainable development
commitments, on the Internet. NRCan will provide up-to-date training
and awareness tools to employees to demonstrate leadership and innovation
in environmental, health, and safety responsibility. In particular,
NRCan will conduct 10 sessions for staff on environmental, health
and safety responsibilities by 2003.

Through ongoing participation in government-wide efforts, contributes
to the development of awareness, standards and practices that promote
environmentally responsible operations.

4.1.4

By 1998, deliver NRCan's Environmental Assessment registry guide
for electronic report form users.

Helps raise awareness of environmental assessment practices and
regulatory obligations with the department.

The completion of the Manual by 2000 was delayed, pending the results
of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act Five Year Review. NRCan
has committed to incorporate these results and update the Manual
by 2002.

Among other commitments to improve awareness within the Department,
NRCan will conduct 10 sessions for staff on environmental, health
and safety responsibilities by 2003. NRCan will continue to measure
the department's internal environmental, health and safety
performance and has committed to conduct audits in selected organizational
units by 2003, to verify that environmental, health and safety performance
is improving over time.

By 2000, review and update the Departmental Environmental Assessment
Manual.

An up-to-date NRCan Environmental Assessment Manual will provide
valuable assistance to NRCan employees when determining whether
a project is subject to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

Over the period from 1998 to 2000, conduct four training sessions
on environmental responsibility awareness, four environmental assessment
evaluations, and four environmental health and safety audits each
year.

In SDS - Now and for the Future,
NRCan has made a number of commitments to increase dialogue among
Aboriginal communities, industry and governments, and to build capacity
in aboriginal and rural communities. Leadership
and partnerships have been identified as one of six key priority
areas where NRCan can make a difference in SDS
- Now and for the Future
. Action commitments to be undertaken
in partnership with other organizations have been highlighted throughout
the strategy.

By 2000, complete an assessment of NRCan partnerships with Environmental
Organizations to identify and promote best practices.
