1.1.1
Launch a new Knowledge Initiative to better integrate and make
publicly accessible its knowledge across the Department; by 1998,
consult with stakeholders and complete an inventory of our knowledge
holdings.
Mar 31/99
Helps manage, use and improve access to the departments information
assets through an electronic, web-based knowledge infrastructure
and software tools.
NRCan will help Canadians to make better sustainable development
decisions by improving and increasing the electronic dissemination
of natural resources data, information and knowledge. In SDS
- Now and for the Future, NRCan has committed to provide
targeted knowledge and tools to inform decision makers through the
Canadian Natural Resources Knowledge Gateway.
1.1.2
Develop the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) to provide
national access to geographic information, in partnership with provinces,
territories, and other federal departments; by 1999, complete the
NRCan portion of the CGDI.
Mar 31/00
Provides geographic information about sustainable development of
Canada's natural resources to stakeholders and other government
departments to stimulate innovation, build capacity for decision-
making and promote sustainable development.
NRCan has developed access to significant geographic data holdings,
and will further develop linkages with national and provincial/territorial
information systems managed by other departments and levels of government
to provide essential geographic data, tools and services to support
enhanced decision-making, policy development, and integrated assessments.
1.1.3
Undertake the first national survey of energy use in commercial
buildings; by 1998, finalize the design of the survey.
Mar 31/99
Provides for development of intensity indicators at sector and
segment levels and a baseline for determining the energy and environment
impact of new energy efficiency programs, the Commercial Building
Incentive Program (CBIP) and Energy Innovators Plus.
To date, CBIP and Energy Innovators Plus programs have attracted
over 600 applicants combined, with over 200 new projects underway.
In SDS- Now and for the Future,
NRCan has committed to expanding the Energy Innovators Plus program
in order to reduce GHG emissions from commercial sources and to
increase awareness of energy use among Canadians.
1.1.4
Launch new reporting on the health of Canada's forest ecosystems;
by 1998, publish the First National Forest Health Assessment.
Mar 31/99
Establishes the baseline on the health of Canada's forests in order
to measure, assess and plan our progress towards the sustainable
management of our forests.
NRCan's sustainable forest management initiatives will continue
to enable improved decision making. The National Forest Information
System, a commitment in SDS- Now and for
the Future, will ultimately enable the timely and authoritative
measurement and reporting on the sustainability of Canada's
forests.
1.1.5
By 2000, produce first report on Sustainable Management of Forests
in Canada, to be tabled at the United Nations Commission on sustainable
development on 15 April 2000.
Mar 31/01
Demonstrates Canada's continued commitment to sustainable forest
management by disseminating knowledge on the state of Canada's forests
to an international audience.
NRCan will continue to promote Canada's reputation for sustainable
resource management through participation in international fora,
and will demonstrate leadership internationally by transferring
knowledge and technology.
By 2000, identify values that are relevant to the environmental,
social and economic impacts of the minerals and metals sector activities
and products as a step to the development of credible sustainable
development indicators.
Mar 31/00
Demonstrates Canada's continued commitment to sustainable mineral
and metals development through the creation of indicators.
NRCan has committed in SDS- Now and for
the Future to publish sustainable development indicators
for energy by 2001 and for minerals and metals by 2003.
By 1999, establish an historical data series on the energy economy
to assist in the development of appropriate sustainable development
indicators for the energy sector.
Mar 31/99
Demonstrates Canada's continued commitment to sustainable energy
development through the creation of indicators.
