NRCan's commitment to ongoing stakeholder engagement will
continue to inform NRCan policy and programs, educate and inform
stakeholders, build a shared sense of responsibility for sustainable
development among stakeholders and the department.

1.2.2

By 1998, release National Forest Strategy (1998-2003) at National
Forest Congress.

Promotes sustainable forest use and conservation through a plan
of action which incorporates ecological, economic, social and cultural
aspects.

A new National Forest Strategy (2003-2008) will be prepared, in
consultation with stakeholders, building on the success of National
Forest Strategy (1998-2003) Sustainable Forests: A Canadian Commitment.

1.2.3

By 1998, prepare, based on consultations with stakeholders, Canadian
interventions for the second session of the Intergovernmental Forum
on Forests, with DFAIT and CIDA.

Develops a Canadian position on key global forest policy issues
by consulting with the provinces, territories, the Aboriginal community
and non-government organizations, as well as with industry, labour
and environmentalists.

The IFF is a mechanism to promote global dialogue, cooperation and
a greater consensus on forest development and management.

NRCan will continue to work with like-minded countries in multilateral
fora, including the United Nations Forum on Forests and the Conservation
on Biological Diversity, to build consensus on a framework to further
the implementation of internationally agreed upon action to achieve
sustainable forest management at the national, regional and global
levels.

By 1999, convene, with DFAIT and CIDA, consultation sessions as
part of Canada's preparations for the third session of the Intergovernmental
Forum on Forests.

for the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Forum on Forests.

By 1998, as directed by the Arequipa Declaration, organize and
co-host, in cooperation with Latin American partners, a workshop
on the Safe Use Principle.

Promotes international cooperation on the sustainable development
of minerals and metals and the implementation of the Arequipa Declaration
of the Mines Ministers of the Americas and Action Plan

Through various international fora such as CAMMA, APEC- GEMEED,
and the International Study Groups, NRCan will continue to demonstrate
leadership and to promote Canadian approaches to the sustainable
development of minerals and metals. NRCan will additionally work
to promote sustainable development in a broader context through
continued efforts to establish a global dialogue on mining, minerals
and metals in the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

By 1998, organize and host a meeting of the APEC Group of Experts
on Mineral and Energy Exploration and Development with the theme
of sustainable development of minerals and metals.
