Indigenous clean fuels projects – Clean Fuels Fund

Deadline: The request for information has closed on September 3, 2021.

To meet our 2030 and 2050 net-zero emissions goals, Canada’s economy needs to be powered by two equally important energy sources – clean power and clean fuels. The clean fuels include clean hydrogen, advanced biofuels, liquid synthetic fuels and renewable natural gas. Clean fuels are expected to play a critical role in “hard-to-decarbonize” sectors such as industry and medium- and heavy-duty freight and in remote and northern locations.

We recognize the unique opportunities that clean fuels can present for Indigenous businesses and communities and encourage Indigenous participation on all projects. Through the Clean Fuels Fund, we want to ensure that our current and future processes include measures to enable and encourage greater Indigenous participation.

The Clean Fuels Fund will reserve notional funds to support projects led by Indigenous businesses, communities and organizations. Ownership of these projects must be at least 50% Indigenous.

Thank you for helping us shape the upcoming processes

Through the request for information, NRCan received 10 submissions that identified 15 projects in 6 regions. This information will help us finalize the upcoming call for project proposals targeted to Indigenous businesses, communities and organizations.

Next steps

A dedicated call for clean fuel production and feasibility project proposals targeted to Indigenous-owned businesses, communities and organizations will be launched in January 2022, with continuous intake until spring 2022. The Program will evaluate and approve projects as they are received and will then negotiate and sign contribution agreements.
