Internal water-loop heat pumps

Energy Efficiency Regulations

Regulatory definition

Internal water loop heat pump, a water-source single package or split-system heat pump that is factory-built, is intended for installation in an internal water loop systems and has a cooling or heating capacity of not more than 40 kilowatts (135 000 Btu/h)

Compliance date

Manufactured on or after February 3, 1995

For models manufactured prior, refer to the Regulations

Testing standard

CAN/CSA-C13256-1

Energy efficiency regulations by province

Some provinces also have their own energy efficiency regulations for many of the federally regulated products – find out which ones!

Energy efficiency standard

Energy performance standard for internal water loop heat pumps
Product type Mininum COP
Cooling COPc Heating COPh
November 2006
Cooling capacity
< 5 kW
≥ 3.28°C with 30°C inlet water ≥ 4.2°C with 20°C inlet water
Cooling capacity
≥ 5 kW and ≤ 40 kW
≥ 3.52°C with 30°C inlet water ≥ 4.2°C with 20°C inlet water

Where:

COP = Coefficient of performance – a ratio for both the cooling COPc and heating COPh modes calculated by dividing the capacity expressed in watts by the power input in watts, excluding any supplementary heat
kW = kilowatts
