Traffic signal modules and pedestrian modules

Energy Efficiency Regulations

Regulatory definition

Traffic signal module, a self-contained device that:

  • is designed to fit into a traffic signal housing, and
  • is designed to provide drivers with movement information by means of a red or green traffic signal indicator that has a nominal diameter of 200 mm (8 inches) or 300 mm (12 inches)

Pedestrian module, a self-contained device that:

  • is designed to fit into a pedestrian signal housing, and
  • is designed to provide pedestrians with movement information by means of a walking person display or a hand display but not by means of a countdown message

Compliance date

Manufactured on or after January 1, 2007

For models manufactured prior, refer to the Regulations

Some provinces also have their own energy efficiency regulations for many of the federally regulated products – find out which ones!

Energy efficiency standard

Energy performance standard for traffic signal modules and pedestrian modules
Product type Maximum power Nominal power
Traffic signal modules
Red light traffic signal indicator with a nominal diameter of 300 mm (12 inches) ≤ 17 W ≤ 11 W
Red light traffic signal indicator with a nominal diameter of 200 mm (8 inches) ≤ 13 W ≤ 8 W
Red arrow traffic signal indicator ≤ 12 W ≤ 9 W
Green light traffic signal indicator with a nominal diameter of 300 mm (12 inches) ≤ 15 W ≤ 15 W
Green light traffic signal indicator with a nominal diameter of 200 mm (8 inches) ≤ 12 W ≤ 12 W
Green arrow traffic signal indicator ≤ 11 W ≤ 11 W
Pedestrian modules
With a walking person display and a hand display ≤ 16 W ≤ 13 W
Walking person display only ≤ 12 W ≤ 9 W
Hand display only ≤ 16 W ≤ 13 W

W = watts
mm = millimetre
